Depression

Depression is not just about feeling sad or upset. It is a complex condition which greatly affects your everyday life for more than a two week period and impairs your ability to function. It may leave you thinking and feeling that you are stuck in a dark place and are alone. There are a number of depression conditions that can affect your mental health such as clinical depression, seasonal affective disorder and persistent depressive disorder. Below are a number of symptoms of depression and other resources that can support and inform you of the condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms of depression include:

 

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, pacing etc.) or slowed movements or speech (these actions must be severe enough to be observable by others)
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Some symptoms such as slowed movements or increase in purposeless physical activity, may be recognised by others before yourself.
