Anxiety

Anxiety is not just about being nervous or scared, it is a complex mental health condition that can affect anyone at any stage of life. Anxiety is often linked to avoidance behaviour which in turns can start affecting different areas of life, including relationships, education and employment. It is a condition that causes fear that is out of proportion from the situation or the age of the person experiencing it. It can be caused by a number of factors, including stress, trauma and long term chronic illnesses. Different types of anxiety include: general anxiety disorder, social anxiety and phobias.

Symptoms

Symptoms of anxiety include:

 

  • Restlessness
  • A sense of dread
  • Feeling constantly "on edge"
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability 
  • Tiredness
  • Heartbeat palpitations
  • Muscle aches and tension
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach ache
  • Feeling sick
  • Headache
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep

Some of these symptoms, such as irritability and restlessness may be noticed by others first before yourself.
